Monterey

Submarine Canyon
The
Monterey Submarine Canyon
is some 15-20 million years old and stretches 210 miles off shore.
The canyon first existed in southern California near Santa Barbara
although it looked very different from the way it currently looks.
With the passage of millions of years the canyon was carried along
the San Andreas Fault to its present location. The canyon is one
of the largest in the United States. The deep water cold water upwelling
from the Monterey Submarine Canyon provides an abundance of food
and sediments for the marine ecology of the Monterey Bay Sanctuary.
