
Mission
Santa Barbara
Founded in December 4, 1786 by Fathers Lausen and Paterra
and was the first established after the death of Father Serra. Tenth
in the California chain of missions. Named for Saint Barbara of Greece
(Patron saint of miners and gunners). Nick named "Queen of the
Alta California Missions". The church has been reconstructed or
repaired several times once in 1794, destroyed in 1812 earthquake; rebuilt
in 1815; completed in 1820; the twin towers were added in 1831; damaged
in 1925 earthquake; repairs to the church completed in 1950. Since 1786
this mission has maintained an unbroken tradition of service to the
community.
