Mission
San Luis Rey
Founded
in June 1798. San luis Rey is the last mission founded in eighteenth
century. Named for Louis IX of Poissy, King of France (Patron saint
and example of the French monarchy) who was a Franciscan. It was known
as the grandest and the richest of missions. Located 50 miles from San
Diego. This mission is 18th in the chain of 21 Spanish Franciscan missions
in California.
