House Plaza
Monterey's
historic Custom House Plaza is the center piece for some of Monterey's
large events. The Custom House is California's oldest government
building, constructed in 1827 for the collection of duties (taxes)
on all imported goods via ship into California during Mexican rule.
Today the Custom House is a museum open to the public. The Maritime
Museum is among the attractions in the plaza that treat visitors
to historic information of old Monterey. Tours of the historic Monterey
's Path of History is provided by the California State Parks
system starting from the Maritime museum. The Custom House Plaza
is located next to Fisherman's wharf.
