The city of Monterey has a long and proud history. Downtown Alvarado street has many restaurants, and Cannery Row is home to the Monterey Bay Aquarium as well as lots of shops. Monterey maintains a great bike path that runs along the coast. The Monterey Fisherman's Wharf has always been a great place for a stroll or to catch a whale watching tour. Monterey is the destination for visitors from all over the world. John Steinbeck moved from NewYork to Monterey in 1944 and bought his boyhood dream house the Lara Soto adobe but sold the house a year latter. John Steinbeck used Monterey as a setting for the books Cannery Row, Torilla Flat, and Sweet Thursday.
